Imagine Siouxsie and the Banshees mixed with Bjork mixed with Florence + The Machine. That’s about the best way I can describe Zola Jesus and her frenetic spectral electronic goth sound paired with amazingly powerful vocals. I saw her open for Warpaint and The xx last year at 9:30 Club and honestly, she stole the show from both of them with a whirling, twirling performance that left the whole crowd staring in awe. Since then, she’s been on a seemingly manic streak – playing twice in DC in the past year (once at Red Palace and once at Black Cat), releasing her latest album Conatus to rave reviews, and even appearing on the intro track to M83’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Here’s the video for her latest single, “Vessel,” with visuals perfectly matching the strange and eclectic nature of the song. Yes, it’s weird. Yes, it’s somewhat confusing. And yes, it’s pretty awesome.
Zola Jesus will be returning to DC to perform at U Street Music Hall on February 16, 2012 and her latest album Conatus is out now on Sacred Bones Records. You can get more info on her via her official website, Facebook, or Twitter.
