Alabama Shakes – Hold On

April 9, 2012

Every summer, there seems to be a new rock band that breaks through with a track that grabs the attention of the masses and is played so much that by the end of the summer you can’t remember how many times you heard it (i.e. Kings of Leon – “Sex On Fire” circa 2009). The soul-infused blues-rock quartet led by female vocalist Brittany Howard has potential to be this summer’s buzz-band with the debut album Boys and Girls, released April 1st of this year, stocked full of feel good tracks that fit nicely into any playlist. From first listen there are obvious comparisons to the Cold War Kids, Drive-By Truckers, and Sharon Jones. The group separates from the pack with their unique range in sound from heavy guitar southern rock (“Hang Loose”) to 50’s ballads that you could slow dance to (“Boys and Girls”). The Alabama Shakes following started and continues to evolve with the reaction to their live performances that have been described by many as soul-reviving and alive, primarily due to Brittany’s infectious vocals and stage presence. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the band will be playing closer than New York in the upcoming months, but be sure to keep up with them on their official website and follow them on Twitter for any updates.
