Coming off Cape Dory, their groundbreaking debut album in January 2011, husband and wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley of Denver, Colorado release the first single from their upcoming second album Young & Old. “Origins” grabs you at the first piano note and rocks you gently for just over three minutes. It is one of my favorite tracks in the last month or so, continuing a very familiar Tennis sound: care-free rhythms and poppy vocals transplanted from the 50’s that at the same time suggest an evolving band. This, of course, has nothing to do with the fact that Young & Old is also produced by none other than Patrick Carney of The Black Keys (do those guys ever sleep?). The new LP will be released by Fat Possum Records (ever heard of it) on February 14th, 2012, and this first track is a strong indication that it’s going to be a dandy. I have Cape Dory in the mix of best albums of 2011 and if you haven’t listened to it, I would strongly recommend tracks “Marathon,” “South Carolina,” and “Baltimore.” With the pace and quality of music they’ve been creating, I wouldn’t be surprised if Alaina and Patrick repeat an incredible record with Young & Old, or even three-peats with an album down the line. Be sure to keep up with the band on their official website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
