What do you get when you combine the talents of a singer with a powerful, smoky voice, the brothers Dessner from The National, Zach Condon of Beirut, and musicians from The Walkmen and Wye Oak? Sharon Van Etten is here with the answer in the form of her new album, Tramp. The first single, “Serpents,” has her venomously crooning against an abusive ex – the way she spits “you enjoy sucking on dreams” draws you in even closer to her, even as the drums and guitar crescendo behind her and threaten to swallow you with their sound. After this, I can’t wait to hear the rest of Tramp, coming out February 7.
Be sure to catch Sharon live at Black Cat on February 11th – she’s an amazing performer that I can pretty much guarantee will blow you away. As a bonus, Shearwater (started by former members of my favorite band, Okkervil River) is opening, so it promises to be a pretty terrific night of music all around. In the meantime, check out her Facebook, Twitter, and official website.
