I’m not going to lie, Talib Kweli has been my favorite rapper ever since his classic group collaboration with Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey) on Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star. This only continued through his group Reflection Eternal with DJ Hi-Tek on Train Of Thought and basically hasn’t stopped since, as every album he drops is essential listening for true hip-hop fans. Now he’s linked up with friend and frequent collaborator Res, a Philadelphia indie soul/pop/rock singer, for a new group outing called Idle Warship. And yes, it’s another one that you need to listen to immediately. Released independently from any major labels, the second single “Laser Beams” features Res and Kweli trading sung verses with raps on an upbeat track backed my hand claps that makes you want to boogie. (And yes, I just said boogie.)

Habits of the Heart was just released today – go pick up a copy (or more) and support true independent hip-hop. They’re currently scheduled to play at Black Cat on December 4th – I can pretty much guarantee it will be a show nobody will want to miss.
