It seems like it’s been a while since we’ve had a great Bowie-inspired psychadelic pop group – the last one I can think of that brought a readily accessible and unique sound was MGMT with Oracular Spectacular back in 2007. Get ready for Chappo to fill that space very soon. Much like their more famous counterparts from Wesleyan, the Brooklyn band takes the space rock theme as serious inspiration for their style and sound. Unlike that other band, Chappo is also more than willing to throw in some other genre influences – on “Bodies Coasting,” there’s a definite Fleetwood Mac, Americana-rock sound mixed in to their Space Oddity-influenced style. And they do it beautifully, crafting a song that you’ll want to listen to again and again.
(By the way, remember this iPod Touch commercial? Yeah, that was Chappo’s “Come Home” playing in the background.)
Chappo will be opening for local DC band Ra Ra Rasputin this Friday at Red Palace, so be sure to head over there and give them a listen (and, of course, stick around for the hometown performers). Their latest EP, Plastique Universe II: Pisces Princess, is available now for free through their Bandcamp. Their first full-length, Moonwater, comes out on May 15 via Majordomo Records. And, of course, be sure to follow them around on Facebook, Twitter, and their official website as well.
